From Currywurst to Schnitzel

Our visit to Berlin wouldn’t have been complete without trying out some German delicacies! We also visited some really good restaurants and some not so great, find out below where we went and what we thought!

Andy’s Diner & Bar

Our first stop for food once arriving in Berlin, chosen because of the blackboard outside saying their special was currywurst and Kieren had to try it.

Inside was themed like an American diner and we got right to ordering, I had the chicken burger and of course Kieren went for the Currywurst. Currywurst which we soon discovered was really just a big German sausage covered in ketchup and curry powder which Kieren loved but I wasn‘t a huge fan of. Mine also wasn’t that great and I don’t think we’d rush back.

Spooning

We walked past this wee place in Potsdamer Platz Arcade and I just had to try it out. Basically edible cookie dough with your choice of dough and toppings. I went for the classic choc chip dough with brownie and Oreo toppings and it was bizarre. Very strange eating something that seems raw and inedible but completely safe. It was niche and was cool for the first few spoonfuls but then was really sickly.

Cool if you’ve never tried it but not something I’d eat on the regular, pass me some ice cream!

Vapiano

On day 2 after all our activities we were super hungry and seeing as we were already in Potsdamer Platz we headed into the nearby Vapiano for lunch. After our unbelievably disappointing breakfast (not even worth adding to this list), we were really hungry and in need of something sustainable. Unfortunately for Kieren, pasta was on the cards in my mind.

if you’ve never been to Vapiano it can be really confusing especially in another country. You are given a card upon entering, pick a table then head to either the risotto, pasta or pizza bar to tell the chef directly what you’d like. They scan your card and make your food right in front of you. At the end you take your card to the desk at the door and pay, simple as that! Unless you do a Kieren and lose your card. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

I had arabbiata with this ‘octopus tentacle’ pasta (so Kieren said) and he had a meat feast calzone. Despite the portions looking small, I could hardly finish mine! Kieren wasn’t too impressed with his but I thought it was amazing!

Again, a cool place to visit with the cooking in front of you element but means you’re standing around for ages if it’s busy which unfortunately it was, but I liked the customisation.

Chicken Buzz

For dinner Kieren was praying for some meat so using the FourSquare app, I found a wee place by the name of Chicken Buzz.

A Korean chicken shack, we were skeptical on arrival but our minds quickly changed when the food arrived. Hands down the best place we went the full trip and right up there with one of my favourite restaurants I’ve ever been to!

We ordered the popcorn chicken with Korean sauce and hot sauce as well as the chicken buzz burger with skinny fries and shared them between us. The skinny fries were the skinniest fries I’ve ever seen and the food was absolutely incredible! We struggled to finish it and wished we’d left space for the bubble waffles they had for dessert.

Definitely worth the visit if you’re ever going to Berlin!

Sharlie Cheen

Now from the best, to the worst. After dinner we walked past this cool looking bar with an equally cool name ‘Sharlie Cheen’. It played strange music and had a bizaare cocktail menu where I ended up after much deliberation as to any cocktails I’d actually like, ordered a pornstar martini slush. It was the strongest cocktail I’ve ever had despite being a slush and actually had to force myself to drink it. Kieren‘s wasn’t much better, he ended up ordering some weird concoction with gin and carrot juice and it tasted just as bad as it sounds. We struggled to make a dent in them, quickly paid and ran out the door never to return. Not worth the 20€.

Belushi’s

After Day 2’s disasterous breakfast we set out to find somewhere that did good old fashioned fry-ups and landed on Belushi’s.

It was absolutely what we were needing and couldn’t have asked for better. The rest of the menu included burgers and such like American classics and seemed like a pretty good place for food and drinks any time of the day. Had we found this yesterday, we definitely would’ve went more than once.

Alex

On our final night, we picked this restaurant at random again in Potsdamer Platz (our fave place) and after checking the menu, we weren’t too hopeful for what it had to offer.

We were definitely wrong. Kieren ordered another German delicacy known as Schnitzel which could come as pork or turkey, fried in breadcrumbs and came with fries. Kieren went for the pork version and I ordered a pulled pork burger with fries.

It was amazing! Super impressed from both of us on both the meals and was absolutely a good send-off as our last meal.

For dessert I ordered Spaghetti Ice Cream, yes you read correctly SPAGHETTI! The waitress had to read me the menu as it was in German but it sounded intriguing so it had to be ordered. It came with raspberry sauce and raspberries and was basically ice cream put through a spaghettier (is that even a thing?), anyways it was really good!

8.5/10

Overall, I’d day we did pretty good at finding good restaurants as well as trying out some actual German food!
